Picture
You can use pictures to develop writing skills
Put your learners into pairs or small groups.
Ask them to use the image as the subject for a story, and give them the first sentence:

As quietly as he could, John climbed out of the window and dropped to the ground.

- students brainstorm ideas and possible storylines
- they make notes of good vocabulary, linking words, etc
- you can help as necessary
- they don't write the story itself at this point
- they share ideas in open class, and then write their own version of the story as homework
- in the next lesson, some students read out their stories and the class decides which is best
